Distributed sediment yield modelling: Importance of initial sediment conditions
نویسندگان
چکیده
The importance of initial sediment conditions on model calibration and validation is analysed. A sediment model was calibrated and validated under three different initial sediment conditions: (0) no sediment availability, (1) calibration of the initial sediment condition and (2) using a warm-up simulation. The model results were assessed in terms of the graphic of fine sediment transport, or sedigraphs, and the visual fit of the hysteresis on the sediment rating. All strategies provided adequate results. However, the loop rating curve analysis demonstrated that the choice of initial sediment conditions affected the simulation results. Without any initial sediment condition, the model results were typically inferior to the simulation results with calibration or warmup. The calibration of initial conditions proved to be the most reliable technique to generate clockwise hysteresis loops, but failed in reproducing other loop types. Overall, the warm-up simulations showed encouraging results, providing satisfactory fine sedigraph simulation results. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Detecting changes in sediment sources in drought periods: The Latrobe River case study
The transfer of sediments through the landscape (sediment connectivity) depends on hydrological conditions. This study aimed at assessing changes in sediment sources engendered under extreme drought. A sediment budget model that considered hillslope sediment connectivity was applied to the Latrobe River catchment (South-east Australia) in a relatively normal period (1990-1996) followed by part ...
متن کاملAssessing the applicability of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) to Irish Catchments
Elevated suspended sediment concentrations in fluvial environments have important implications for system ecology and even small concentrations may have serious consequences for sensitive ecosystems or organisms, such as freshwater pearl mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera). Informed decision making is therefore required for land managers to understand and control soil erosion and sediment del...
متن کاملModel Study of the Relationship between Sediment Yield and River Basin Area
The SHETRAN physically based, spatially distributed model is used to investigate the scaling relationship linking specific sediment yield to river basin area, for two contrasting topographies of upland and more homogeneous terrain and as a function of sediment source, land use and rainfall distribution. Modelling enables the effects of the controls to be examined on a systematic basis, while av...
متن کاملRunoff and sediment yield modeling using WEPP in a semi-arid environment (Case study: Orazan Watershed)
Water erosion is a major environmental problem in many parts of the world. Majority of semi-arid countries are concerned because of their specific climate and soils sensitivity, but also because of the recent intensification of human activities and agricultural practices. Accurate estimation of water erosion for various land-use and climate scenarios is so an important key to define sustainable...
متن کاملEvaluation of soil losses and sediment yield using modified PSIAC model
ABSTRACT- One of the big problems today human societies are faced with is the problem of soil erosion. In this study, the "MPSIAC model" was used to estimate sediment yield and provide sediment yield map in Cachoyeh watershed. The MPSIAC method incorporates nine environmental factors that contribute to sediment yield of the watershed. These factors are: surface geology, soil, climate, runoff, t...
